This is a post I’ve been trying to write for a while, but whenever I tried, it just wouldn’t come out right. So here we go again, my attempt at expressing a dissenting opinion of a popular myth. The common belief is funny women don’t win when it comes to relationships. I can’t link to any studies to support this theory, but I’m pretty sure most of us have heard it from other people or seen it played out one way or another.

Why Humor Is Underrated in Women
They say a woman with a joke is something like a woman with a tool belt, sure it may be useful, but it’s unnecessary. Funny duties are a man’s responsibility, partly because when we’re out in the streets trying to seduce a woman, humor can be our best weapon. Very few of us are fortunate enough to just stand around, we have to crack a joke to take down a woman’s defenses. Women on the other hand, just have to have a nice smile and a laugh that doesn’t sound like a call to the wild. I agree with none of this, and I bemoan anybody who does, especially other funny women. For whatever reason, funny women have let the voice of those who don’t like funny women drown out the voices of those who do. I like funny women. What I don’t like is funny women who think their sense of humor is a cross to bear. And I think more than the guys who say they don’t want a woman who can crack jokes, or they don’t care for them, it’s other women contributing to this idea. Women, men like wit. Not all men, but a lot more men than some would have you believe. I can’t remember a time in my life when a woman has made me laugh and I immediately thought to myself, “I wish she wouldn’t have done that.” Not only do I support the woman who knows how to make people laugh, I’m about this close to making it a requirement. Some women I have dated who read this are probably rolling their eyes right now as they say, “I made you laugh all the time and we’re not together.” To which I say: “Your sense of humor had nothing to do with that.” Really, it didn’t. If anything, chances are, it’s the funny women I dated who I think about the most. A funny woman is usually a smart woman, someone who can find some hilarity in the random, or knows how to poke fun at me in such a way where even I can laugh. Do you people have any idea how much intelligence that takes? It’s not easy, so when I find that quality in a woman, I don’t want to do anything but keep it close. I truly believe the humor in a relationship is a shared responsibility. It’s on us, not just me, to have inside jokes, and memories we can laugh at months and years down the road. And I think more men are demanding humor from their women because they realize a woman with no sense of humor, who doesn’t know how to crack a joke, might also be a woman who has to read to be smart. Everybody, and I do mean everybody, appreciates someone who can make them laugh. The only people we aren’t welcoming to the laugh fest are the people who think they’re funny and they’re really not. We all know someone like that and we all try keep ourselves as far away from them as possible. But ladies, if you are funny, don’t hide it. Use it, make a man laugh. It may not be enough to keep him forever, but I’m pretty sure things ended for reasons other than your ability to make him laugh on the daily. Funny girl, you’re not single because you’re funny, and if you think that’s the reason, the joke, my dear, is on you.
